White Tank Mountains

El Mirage, Arizona

We went for a great hike yesterday with our wonderful friends Dean and Lil in the White Tank Mountains.  (The picture below is not mine.)

From Wikipedia:

During seasonal heavy rainfall, accumulated water tends to rush rapidly through the steep canyons, over time scouring out a number of depressions or “tanks” in the white  granite near the base of the mountains. These white “tanks” are the source of the mountains’ name.

Dean and Lil have been there many times, and they picked the Waterfall Hike for the day’s journey.

There is much to see…

Including lots of petroglyphs.

Amazing rock formations, both man-made and natural.

You can get an idea of the size of the waterfall area by how small everyone looks at the base.

And here’s a picture of the huge water carved area with a small pool left over from the most recent rain.

There are many memorial benches along the trail. This one struck my heart because Justin was not quite 22 and I love the inscription…

The words are from The Beatles’ song Two of Us.

John Wayne Toilet Paper

El Mirage, Arizona

The other night we were visiting our good friends Dean and Lil who are renting a house in Phoenix for a while.

While we were there, I used the restroom.

I almost whooped with delight because that was the first time I’ve used real toilet paper in months! It truly was ultra soft. 🙂

81bFvGO8VAL._SL1500_RV septic systems are fragile, so we use a special one ply paper that does the job but leaves a lot to be desired.

It could also be called John Wayne Toilet Paper:

John Wayne toilet paper – Military term used to describe the low grade toilet paper found in the MRE (Meal Ready to Eat) accessory packet. Called so because it’s rough, tough and don’t take no shit off of anybody.

A- + B

El Mirage, Arizona

Played pickleball at our new resort yesterday morning at a round robin competition where we each played with different partners against different opponents for six matches.

It’s always intimidating to play with and against new people. There’s so much to figure out…

Do they have a soft game? How accepting are they of new players? How good are they?

And while all that was going through my head, I’m also trying to play my best and play my game.

I gave myself an A- for facing the intimidating situation and a B for my execution.

Next pickleball session, my goal is an A- for execution. I’d rather be happier with my play than happier with my courage…

Bowls

El Mirage, Arizona

We learned more about a new sport yesterday. Well, it’s actually an old sport, but we’d never heard of it before.

0102151533aFormerly known as lawn bowling, bowls is a sport that’s at least seven hundred years old.

It began in England, and several kings banned play because they felt that too much play would destroy soldiers’ archery skills.

Bowls is very similar to curling and bocci ball, and all three sports use some of the same terminology.

0102151537a

A small while ball called a jack is rolled across the lawn. The jack marks the spot that players roll their bowls to; bowls closer to the jack score highest.

0102151551

The bowls are made of a compressed composite material. They are weighted heavier on one side so that they curve when rolling towards the jack.

There are lots of traditions in the sport’s play. During tournaments players wear only white. Communication between partners involves lots of hand signals because they are at opposite ends of the court.

0102151550

I have tried and loved curling, but I never did understand scoring. Bowls scoring sounds complicated, too.

I would love to try bowls, but I’m not sure Rich would be happy if I picked up another sport to be passionate about…

I’m hopeful Rich will give it a try while I’m playing pickleball.

Baby, It’s Cold Outside…

El Mirage, Arizona

We moved yesterday from Gold Canyon to El Mirage. Basically we moved from east of Phoenix to west of Phoenix.

There’s a huge cold front throughout most of the USA, and we haven’t escaped it.

There was snow on the Superstition Mountains yesterday morning.

0101151004

Rich talked with one neighbor who said he hadn’t seen snow that low in over 20 years. Beautiful!

I guess we’ve gotten used to the warmer temperatures because we’re freezing to death.

One of my favorite sayings is appropriate for this weather: “It’s colder than a witch’s tit in a brass bra!”

And here’s where that saying came from:

In the age of sail, on the cannon deck of a warship, next to each cannon, cannonballs were piled up at the ready, in a pyramid, which the sailors called a witches tit.

It was built on a brass plate with holes cut in to hold the cannonballs from rolling off as the ship listed, rolled and pitched. The sailors called the plate a brass bra.

Because brass expands and contracts with temperature at a greater rate than iron, rare extreme cold on the cannon deck would cause the brass plate to shrink to the point that the cannonballs would be released from the pyramid and roll over the deck. “Colder than a witche’s tit in a brass bra” is a saying that evolved from that phenomenon.

And now you know should that question come up in your next game of Trivial Pursuit. 🙂

We’re Not Crazy

Gold Canyon, Arizona

One of the great things about staying here at Gold Canyon Resort for two months is that we’ve developed friendships that have gone past the superficial level.

We’ve exchanged stories and eventually confided in one another.

The surprising thing is finding out that others, not all but most, are as unsure of what to do as we are.

Harry and Marlene are in their 80’s and they are trying to decide if it’s time to sell their 2500 square foot home that’s on the shores of Lake Almanor in northern California and move closer to their children.Almanor2

Mike and Debbie are at odds. Debbie thinks it might be time to sell their home in Ohio while Mike wants to keep it. She’s ready to try RV living full time; he’s not so sure.

Wally and Lea are also trying to decide if they should sell one of their two homes. Maybe they will upgrade their Arizona park model to an actual home because they spend most of their time here and more space would be nice.

GroundSetParkModelHome

(Park models are about 400 square feet (14′ by 35′), and most have an ‘Arizona Room’ added on that is either additional living space or a covered patio. In Texas they are called ‘Texas Rooms’.)

The good news for us is that hearing everyone else’s dilemmas has helped us realize that we’re not alone.

We are struggling with deciding how and when to transition back to home ownership. We ping and pong ideas back and forth continuously.

Perhaps it’s time to buy an eight ball… 🙂

Rock ‘N’ Art

Gold Canyon, Arizona

Lots of people in the RV resort must go shopping at the Mesa Market because it’s easy to spot similar yard art that’s available at the market.

One of the types of yard art that intrigues me combines rocks and metal.

Most are made to look like bugs like this trio of ants.

1229141332

I love this full orchestra with each bug playing a different instrument.

And one last close up look…

Really, the more accurate name for this post should be, “Stuff I want Rich to make once he has a shop again…” 😉

Sailor’s Delight

Gold Canyon, Arizona

Prettiest sunset we’ve seen here last night.

1228141735b

Red sky at morning, sailors take warning;

Red sky at night, sailors’ delight.

1228141735a

Alas, these pictures don’t do the scene justice. The blue in the sky was almost smurf turf blue in intensity. And the orange was much brighter. Maybe it’s a foreshadowing of Boise State University winning the Fiesta Bowl later this week. Go Broncos! 🙂

1228141734

I wondered where the warning vs delight saying came from. According to Wikipedia,

In the Bible at Matthew 16:2-3, Jesus is quoted as saying:

When it is evening, you say, “It will be fair weather; for the sky is red.”
And in the morning, “It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.”

With the intense colors we saw last night, Phoenix sailors must be super delighted.

MacGyver Moment

Gold Canyon, Arizona

I love broiled bread.

Brushed with just a bit of butter, heated under a hot broiler until the butter is melted, the bread is warm, the top crust is toasted, and the rest of the bread is chewy… So delicious!

Farmers-Market-Brunch-9-300x199Alas, there is no way to broil in Homer.

There is a convection/microwave combination that does it’s job well, but it’s just not geared to cook some of my favorite things the way I want.

A Facebook friend posted a link to an article in the San Francisco Globe about 7 Different Ways to Use Your Waffle Iron.

That got me thinking and having my own little MacGyver Moment…

macgyver198

So we bravely went to Walmart yesterday and elbowed our way through all the other crazy people stupid enough to go there on the Saturday after Christmas to buy a waffle iron.

1227141728

Last night we had some delicious Anasazi beans with Waffled Toast!

1227141728a

It was so good that it was almost worth waiting seven months since my last broiled bread…
