The Penny Date

Dear Gentle Blogreader,

stackofpenniesYou may have seen or heard of this before, but I haven’t. A friend posted it on Facebook.

Rich is still recuperating from his broken knee and surgery, so we can’t do this yet.

But once he’s ready for me to chauffeur him around, we’ll be doing this for our next ‘date’.

“The Penny Date” — Unique and Fun Date Idea!

Whether it’s your first date or your 400th, here’s fun, new, unique way of figuring out where to go!

I saw this on Pinterest the other day, and had to share it. What a fun day!

penny

Penny Date Rules:

  1. Get dressed and grab a penny.
  2. Let your partner choose a number between 10-20. This will be the number of times you flip the penny.
  3. Pull out of the driveway and begin! HEADS is right, TAILS is left.
  4. Every time you come to an intersection, flip the penny, and turn the corresponding direction.
  5. Once you get to the number from Step 2, look around. Make your date there!

We often have a hard time deciding what to do or deciding who’s going to decide what to do.

The Penny Date will take a lot of the decision making out of each date. 🙂

Wishing You Dog Speed

Watch this to see some crazy fast dogs having a blast!

And their owners are having a rather good time as well…

From NBC News:
Off They Go! Dogs Descend on Indianapolis for Flyball

High-octane canines are competing this week at the North American Flyball Championships in Indianapolis, a city that knows a thing or two about speed.

The tournament is one of the world’s largest gatherings of Flyball enthusiasts and their eager pets, who seem to love the sport as much as their owners do — if not more.

Flyball is a steeplechase of sorts: two teams of four dogs each go muzzle to muzzle as the racing dogs take turns speeding past hurdles to retrieve a tennis ball and bring it back to their owners. Penalties are applied when a dog drops a ball or is released too soon.

The dogs seem to feed off each other’s energy, creating canine chaos.

“We don’t discourage barking — that’s their way of saying, ‘I’m having a blast,'” said Curtis Smith, an Alaska resident who has been coming to the tournament for seven years. “The camaraderie of the sport just can’t be beat,” he said.

The sport is far from obscure. There are over 400 clubs and 6,500 competing dogs in Canada and the United States, and this particular event has attracted teams from Norway and Japan.

Participants compete for the thrill; there is no cash prize. “You don’t make a penny,” Floridian Scott Earl said. “It’s all about little ribbons.”

But that doesn’t stop some from taking training seriously.

“They are athletes. We do a lot of work at the house, we work on conditioning. They eat better than we do a lot of the time,” Benjamin Hill of North Carolina said.

Although some owners have their dogs on strict diets and training schedules, it doesn’t necessarily take a champion to compete. “The everyday home pet can do it,” Hill said.

A Walk in the Neighborhood

Sophie and I try to go for a couple of strolls in the neighborhood each day.

And here’s what we saw today…

Most all of the houses have pumpkins in decorative displays.

1021151050

Trees have lots of fall colors.

1021151832

1021151102a

There are lots of patriots who also happen to be Boise State University fans.

1021151102

There are wide walkways in parts of the neighborhood.

1021151053a

1021151101a

This mum bush was HUGE–about 3′ x 5′.

1021151101

This is Sophie’s favorite place to stop, sniff, and poop AND pee as I drag her along trying to not let her poop OR pee…

1021151059

I fell in love with these ‘toadstools’. The owner made them with small pumpkins sitting on top of decorative winter squash. 1021151058c 1021151058b1021151058

It never ceases to amaze me how many Halloween decorations people put up.

1021151056a

This guy is upset because Boise State football lost another football game…

1021151056

Everywhere one looks, pumpkins are popping out.

1021151055

This is the prettiest time of year with fall colors AND summer blooms still hanging on.

1021151054a1021151102b

Some of the flowers are rather strange and ‘grown’ in Boise State Football colors.

1021151835

And yet more Halloween decorations…

1021151106 1021151810

There are lots of fountains in the subdivision, but this one is by far my favorite.  I introduced myself to the owner one day and asked him if the paint was John Deere green. He smiled and said, “Well, yes, it is.” I asked if he had been a farmer, and he smiled again and said, “Yep, for almost fifty years.” 🙂

1021151838a

And then Sophie and I were back at home…

1021151107

And while we might not have the coolest Halloween decorations up, we do have the coolest mail box cover in the neighborhood.

1021151107b

I specifically chose unperfect pumpkins so that they’d have a good home.

1021151108

And we walked in the front door to get ready for a nap…

I’m All Thumbs

I just bought a cheap new laptop computer today.

My Nexus tablet is having issues and I’m tired of using my phone when surfing the Web while sitting and watching TV.

Yes, I know: It’s a First World Problem!

But I solved my little FWP by throwing money at it…

throw_money_at_it

Now I have another little problem.

My new laptop is running on Windows 10, and my browser of choice is Google Chrome.

I don’t think they like one another because randomly the screen contents zoom in and out and in and out.

I’m sure it’s not random, and I’m pretty sure it’s user error.

But I can’t figure it out. It’s driving me crazy, and I feel like I’m all thumbs…

I haven’t felt like such a huge techno idiot since I first fell in love with computers (a Commodore 64) over 30 years ago.

A Good Deed at a Hard Time

From KCRA

After a California couple called off their wedding, the bride-to-be’s family decided to turn the $35,000 extravagant event into a feast for the homeless.

The bride’s mother, Kari Duane, said Sunday that rather than cancel the reception, they invited Sacramento’s homeless for a once in a lifetime meal Saturday at the Citizen Hotel, one of the city’s finest venues.

wed-pic-3-jpg

Duane said her 27-year-old daughter called her Monday to tell her she and her fiance had decided not go through with the wedding. Soon after, the family decided to share the nonrefundable event with the less fortunate.

“Even though my husband and I were feeling very sad for our daughter, it was heartwarming to see so many people be there and enjoy a meal,” Duane said.

She said they had already paid for a reception that would have hosted 120 guests. About 90 homeless single people, grandparents and whole families with newborns showed up and enjoyed a meal that included appetizers, salad, gnocchi, salmon, and even tri-tip. Some even dressed up for the occasion.

Erika Craycraft arrived with her husband and five children.

“To lose out on something so important to yourself and then give it to someone else is really giving, really kind,” Craycraft told KCRA-TV.

Part of the wedding price tag includes a nonrefundable honeymoon, so on Sunday mother and daughter set off for Belize.

“I hope that when she looks back at this, she knows she was doing something good with a bad situation,” Duane said.

Cinderfella Jones

I watched and/or listened to the entire Pittsburgh Steelers vs Arizona Cardinals game today.

It was an exciting game. And it was capped off by a good Cinderella–make that Cinderfella–story!

svc

Pittsburgh was playing with their veteran back-up quarterback Michael Vick because their franchise quarter back Ben Roethlisberger was injured a few weeks ago.

When Michael Vick was injured during the game, the Steelers’ third string quarterback Landry Jones got his first playing time in a regular season NFL game since he was drafted by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 2013 draft.

Jones’ Wikipedia entry had already been updated within a couple of hours:

On October 18, 2015, during the Steelers’ game against the Arizona Cardinals, Jones would play his first NFL game, replacing an injured Michael Vick in the third quarter with the Steelers down 10-6. He finished the game with 168 passing yards and 2 touchdowns as he led the Steelers to a 25-13 comeback win.

It’s insane to think that a quarterback playing in his first NFL game would complete 8 of 12 passes for 168 yards.

And I think it’s even crazier to find an NFL player who wears flannel in a post-game press conference and starts by saying, “Oh my goodness…”!

landry-jones-cardinals-postgame

He grew up in a small town of just over 10,000 in southeastern New Mexico, and he was named after legendary Dallas Cowboys’ coach Tom Landry.

I love a good Cinderfella story, and Landry Jones sure has one.

The Grandma in the Window

A heartwarming story about a woman who has been waving to school kids for five years…

From King5 News in Seattle:

A warmth radiates from school bus No. 7 on Carol Mitzelfeld’s chilly morning route in Arlington. She knows all 90 of her students by name. There is a comfort and familiarity here that radiates well beyond the steamy windows of her bus — all the way to a woman known as “the grandma in the window.”

She is a 93-year-old lady who has been waving to the kids on the bus from her dining room window every school day for five years. The kids feel like she’s a part of the family and always wave back.

“Carol was telling us that a lot of times she doesn’t remember her daughter’s name, but she always remembers to wave to the kids on the bus,” said 7th grader Axtin Bandewerfhorst. “That made me feel really special.”

But one day a few weeks ago, the window was empty. And the next day. And the next, as well.

Mitzelfeld found out grandma had suffered a stroke.

“It was kind of heartbreaking because she was always there,” said Bandewerfhorst.

It turns out, grandma’s name is Louise Edlen. She has 30 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and she’s been married to her husband Dave for 53 years. Dave Edlen has spent the past three weeks holding his wife’s hand at a rehabilitation center while she recovers.

“She’s a very special lady,” he said.

When Mitzelfeld found out about Lousie Edlen’s stroke, she brought Edlen a bouquet of flowers.

The next day, a sign appeared in the dining room window that simply read, “Thank You.”

“That made me really smile,” said 10th grader Cheyanne Holt. “It shows how much we mean to her.”

To show how much grandma means to them, the kids made their own sign for Louise. It’s a large photograph showing all of the students waving from inside the bus.

“This is from the kids,” Mitzelfeld told her. “They miss you and want you to get better.”

The stroke has partially paralyzed Louise Edlen’s throat, making it very difficult for her to speak, but the children inspire her.

“I miss them, too,” she strained. “I’m trying to get better.”

“It means everything in the world to her,” said her husband Dave Edlen. “It gives her something to look forward to every day.”

If all goes as planned, Louise Edlen will return home on Tuesday and promises to be back in her window, waving, by the time the children head home from school.

He’s a Tough Son of a Gun

I’m not supposed to write anything about Rich in this blog.  And I normally honor his wishes,  but today’s different.

As I type this,  he’s in surgery to repair a broken knee.

Two weeks ago he fell off a saw horse as he was trimming a window on his new shop.  He heard a loud pop and fell  to the ground.

I wasn’t home,  so he crawled back up to a standing position on the saw horse.  Then he used that saw horse as a crutch to get back to the house.

3a262b89b943953675b7ce4bb7f36073ce548f87

Once at the house,  he figured out that he could crawl just fine.  He couldn’t stand or put any weight on his right leg.  If he did,  he’d crumple to the ground in pain.

After a trip to the emergency room followed by  jumping through all sorts of hoops and getting help great friends,  we found a great trauma orthopedic surgeon who is working on him right now.

Turns out Rich has both a split fracture and a compression fracture on his right tibia. So he needs both pins and screws and some bone grafts to repair his knee.

His breaks look similar to this,  but his bone is crumpled to right of the break.

TibPlateauF

We were really hoping that the surgery could combine the repair and a needed knee replacement.

But,  that can’t be done.  So today’s surgery fixes the breaks and prepares the knee for a replacement in a year.

He’s a tough son of a gun and that’s what is going to get him through both the surgery and the following three months of non – weight bearing time on a walker…

UPDATE TWO HOURS LATER :

Surgery went well.  Doctor put in 60cc of grafting material,  a plate,  and some screws.

Power of Dreams – Paper

I saw an amazing commercial last night and thought you might like to see it, too.

268110

The commercial is part of Honda’s “Power of Dreams” series, and this commercial is called “Paper”.

It’s a journey through six decades of Honda innovation…

The spot, called “Paper,” weaves together roughly 3,000 hand-drawn illustrations using stop-motion filming that takes viewers through a paper-flipping, historical journey of Honda products. Images include references to founder Soichiro Honda’s use of a radio generator to power his wife’s bike, Honda’s motorcycle development and multiple shots of cars past and present, including the new 2016 Pilot vehicle.

The original commercial is two minutes long, and an entire marketing campaign is built around it. The two minute version was run on a very limited basis during the last week in September. A one minute version will air during October.

Sometimes Wives Ask Stupid Questions

Yesterday, just before sunup, a small plane landed on the interstate here in Boise.

Luckily no one was hurt, but a passing car clipped one of the airplane’s wings.

That car was driving by a man driving to go fishing with his wife.

She asked him how come he didn’t see the plane.

His answers (bolded below) were hilarious!

A small plane made a crash landing on eastbound Interstate 84 near milepost 52 in Boise this morning, forcing police to shut down two lanes of traffic around 7 a.m. No one was injured.

According to officials, Jon Brinkerhoff was forced to make an emergency landing after the 1970 single engine Cessna he was flying ran out of fuel. He was about one mile from landing at the Boise Airport.

Just after the plane skidded to a stop, it was struck by a Ford pickup truck headed east in the middle lane of I-84.

“When I pass I hear a noise on my right side and my wife says, airplane,” said Dao Nguyen, the driver of the truck. “And I say, ‘I don’t see airplane.”

Due to the engine failure, there were no lights illuminated on the plane. Police say Nguyen clipped the left wing of the downed aircraft. He pulled off at the next exit to examine the damage.

“I opened the door and go look out on the right side and headlight broken, mirror gone and that’s all I see,” said Nguyen.

Nguyen was headed to the Mountain Home area to go fishing when the accident occurred. After assessing the damage, he turned around and drove home with pieces of fiberglass still lodged in his truck. He called police to report the damage and was later cited for leaving the scene of the accident.

Luckily, neither Nguyen nor his wife were injured in the accident. When asked by his wife how he didn’t see the plane Nguyen said he doesn’t usually look up while he’s driving.

“I only have two eyes not four,” said Nguyen. “I can’t look at the road and the sky at the same time.”
