It’s Not the Cold…

Boise, Idaho

When we first moved to Boise nine years ago, I thought I was going to freeze to death.

I moved in mid-February and Rich in April. I expected to be cold during the winter. But I didn’t expect to be cold when Rich came in April. And I certainly didn’t expect to be cold until nearly the end of summer.

I had lived in cold areas before moving to Boise, but those areas were desert–virtually no humidity.

Boise humidity isn’t exceptionally high, but it’s much higher than the Nevada desert.

Just checked humidity as I wrote this post. Boise is 84%, and Reno is 47%.

Since returning to Boise last week, I feel the same way again: freezing to death!

We just finished spending four months in Phoenix, and the humidity there is a whopping 7%.

So NOW I know why I have been feeling like I’m freezing to death since we’ve returned to Boise.

It’s not the cold, it’s the humidity.

  1. It is finally spring appropriate weather here and I got to thinking how few times I wore a turtleneck this past “winter”. Not much!

I took the dogs Saturday and even though it wasn’t that warm, Greta was hunting for shade and needed water about a quarter mile in. I turn around when they have blasted through half the six pounds of water I take and that was about a mile and a third from the car. Ack!

    1. I wore a sweater, an actual sweater, as my main top on Easter Sunday. I was in heaven because I love wearing heavy sweaters, but then I realized that I needed more clothes because I was too cold. 🙂

Bummer on the dogs and hauling all that water. 🙁

  2. Carol, ugh. That does not bode well for the Summer. Kathy, the humidity does make a huge difference. I remember wearing my Irish wool sweaters in England during the summer not because the temperature was that cold, but because the humidity made it feel so stinking cold…. Hang in there!

  3. Spring is especially bad. It looks a lot warmer out that it really is.
Sometimes I dress for how it looks, step outside, then turn right around and go put some more clothes on!
Springtime in Boise makes for interesting laundry too. One day it will be near 80, the next it can drop back into the low 50’s. So you have shorts and tee’s mixed in with the sweaters and wooly socks!

    1. Giggles on the laundry challenges, Sharon. We’re blessed (and spoiled!) with a small washer and dryer in Homer, but we’ve noticed that being back in the cold and wearing actual pants has a doing laundry more often.
