Beartooth Highway

Charles Kuralt called the Beartooth Highway the most beautiful drive in America. I haven’t traveled as much as Charles did, but I’ll take his word for it…

The highway is spectacular even though it is less than 70 miles long.

Beartooth-Vista-5

Construction was completed in 1936, and it’s hard to imagine building the road without modern equipment.

From Wikipedia: “In August 1872, the pass was crossed by Civil War General Philip Sheridan and 120 men returning from an inspection tour of Yellowstone National Park. Rather than take the long detour down the Clarks Fork Yellowstone River to return to Billings, Sheridan took the advice of an old hunter named Shuki Greer, who claimed intimate knowledge of the Beartooth Mountains.”

The summit sits at almost 11,000 feet. The road is closed from mid-October to mid-May depending on snow conditions.

Beartooth-Summit The pictures I took today just don’t do it justice. It’s awe inspiring!

Beartooth-Vista-1

We hiked to a pile of rocks at the summit. All that grows there is alpine vegetation less than 4″ tall.

Beartooth-Alpine

The growing season is so late that all the wildflowers were just in bloom even though it’s late August.

Beartooth-Vista-2You might have to gaze at this picture a bit to see it, but in the dirt 2000′ below where I took this picture, people made a stick figure out of rocks that is smiling. My guess is that the stick figure is at least 100′ tall.

Beartooth-Happy-Man

I was shocked at the number of bicyclists that traverse the road. The road rises almost 3000′ in 12 miles.

The snow must be tough on the snow markers because they finally started using willow tree stalks instead of actual markers.

We will definitely go back to explore the area sometime in the future. It’s just amazing…

Talon Talent

Livingston, MT

We’ve been in osprey country since we started our journey.  I have seen them in all four states we’ve been in: Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Montana.

They just amaze and awe me.

Fish make up 99% of the osprey’s diet. Their eyes are adapted to see the fish underwater as they fly 30 to 130 feet above the water.

They plunge feet first to grab the fish with their talons. Osprey have a different toe formation from most hawks that allows them to grab with two toes in front and two in back.

While flying, the osprey manoeuvres the fish so that its head is in front to reduce wind resistance and to stun the fish.

I saw one tonight while playing pickleball in downtown Livingston. Beautiful.

PS Obviously not my pictures… 😉

Color Me Happy!

Polson, MT

I am on Cloud 9!

I got to play pickleball today!

Color me H A P P Y !f

happy

I played like crap because I have played less than ten times this year, but I don’t care because I got to play pickleball today!

It’s hot and I sweated like a pig, but I don’t care because I got to play pickleball today!

I only scored between one and four points (out of eleven) while playing singles with a 4.0 player, but I don’t care because I got to play pickleball today!

I should be blogging about our trip, but I am not going to today. You might be mad, but I don’t care because I got to play pickleball today!

I am playing tomorrow, too, but I won’t be quite this excited about it, so I will blog about our trip again…

PS I wouldn’t have been as excited if we had played undressed like this…

Jaw Dropping

Columbia Falls, MT

Drove across Glacier National Park today on the Going to the Sun Road.

There’s no other way to describe the scenery, geology, and topography other than Jaw Dropping Gorgeous!

Most of the rock is rather shale-like as compared to solid granite.

It’s just BIG country…

Can’t get over how green it all is for the end of July.

This little ground squirrel kept teasing Sophie while we were talking with a Canadian couple on their way to Sturges on their Harleys.

This is a picture of The Weeping Wall and what’s so amazing about this photo is that there are no cars on the road. 🙂 No small feat for a beautiful summer day…

It’s just an amazing place.

Plethora of Pictures

Moses Lake, WA

We’re traveling today on an unexpected route.

We had to change our plans due to the terrible fires in central Washington. We’ll be driving longer and farther than we anticipated to make it to some prior reservations.

So, I thought I’d take today and post some random photos that I haven’t posted yet…

Ultra Van Mini Convention

At our RV park in Oak Harbor, Washington, there is a small convention of Ultra Vans.

Ultra Vans were a motor home built in the late 1960’s by Corvair. “As a true monococque structure, the Ultra Van has no chassis. It is constructed like an airplane with aluminum ribs covered with riveted sheet aluminum on the top and sides. Compound curved areas (front and back corners) are fiberglass.”

There are only 100 of the originally made 376 still in use, and seven of those 100 are here this weekend! One of them came all the way from Minnesota! 0718141853

Coolest Island Touring Vehicle Ever

Although they almost ran into our Jeep, this young couple from France had the coolest island touring vehicle ever. It’s a moped for two! 0718141120

Wear Your Passion

This car owner obviously loves orcas. What if we all advertised our passions on our cars? Mine would have a picture of a big piece of cheesecake on it! 0718141319

Where are the Moosette Lodges?

Sophie and I went for a short walk. We happened upon a quonset hut building that had this sign on it. 0716141222a The building was old, but the air conditioner was running so I’m assuming that the “Moose” still use their home for meetings.

That got me wondering, was there ever a group for Cow Moosettes?

Deceptively Beautiful

This is a picture of Deception Pass Bridge. It’s just a stunning bridge from whatever angle it is photographed from… bridge

Recycling Genius

Seattle, WA

We happened upon a private art park near Elbe, Washington.

Recycled Spirits of Iron is a one man show by Dan Klennert at his home/shop.

In a beautiful park-like setting.  Dan’s work showcases over 40 years of work.

Most of his work is recycled metal.

But he has some newer pieces made with driftwood.

If Homer had some big unadorned walls, I would have cut loose with some big bucks to buy something for our new ‘home’.

0712140930

But for now I just donated a bit of cash to thank the artist for letting us take a look at his genius.

Homer’s a Home

Boise, ID

Slowly but surely, we are creating a home.

We’ve given the motor home a name. It’s just too formal to keep saying ‘motor home’. So we are calling our new home ‘Homer’. HOME + Roaming = HOMER.

Rummaged through the storage sheds to find some stuff to make Homer feel more mine.

Found a few things that helped.

There was a picture in the bathroom when we bought the RV. The mat and frame were nice, but the picture didn’t fit.

I found some unfinished quilt blocks, sewed four together, and, viola, a nice new picture.

0708141941Next I took a table runner I had made and placed it across the foot of our bed. The colors and design compliment the bedspread that came with the bed.

0708141940

And finally I harvested a whole cloth quilt I made and used it as a cover for the couch.  That’s the place Sophie and I take our afternoon siesta. And the quilt is ever so comfy.

Homer’s happier and so am I.

Foot Heaven

Boise, ID

While we’re in Boise for a bit, we’re both catching up on a few things.

Rich is outfitting the motor home with supplies, tools and equipment. All that important stuff for our journey.

My focus is a bit different.  I’m outfitting myself with important stuff for my journey… 🙂

I recently started running again, and I needed new running shoes.

I went shopping and found the best shoes ever!

For years, I’ve stayed with one style: Nike Air Pegasus. They have worked well for both trail and street running.

nike-air-pegasusBut I don’t think I’m going to have as much opportunity to trail run while we tour, so I was in the market for street running shoes.

The minute I put Nike’s Free running shoe on, my feet felt like they had gone to foot heaven. The shoes are incredibly light, yet comfortably structured. I jogged a bit around the store, and they felt even better.

They’re pricey, but I new that if I bought them I would run more often because I spent so much money on them.

So I bought them and went for a five miler today.

My feet, my heart, and my soul were in heaven!

A New Kind of Marathon

Boise, ID

Another 100+ degree day in Boise.

I must be getting smarter as I get older… I am letting the heat win today. No jogging. No bicycling. No nothing outside…

Today the dogs and I are having a Netflix marathon.

download (5)

We can’t stream video in the RV parks because of the bandwidth limitations. So this is my last chance to Netflix for awhile.

I decided to watch the third season of Scandal. Melissa had told me it was intense and it certainly was. Lots of WOW moments!

scandal-wide

We learned more of the backstory of the main character, and it helped me understand more of the choices she made in the prior two seasons.

The dogs and I loved it.

Wish Came True

Boise, ID

I always said that if Rich and I moved into town that my wish would be to live within one-quarter mile of the Greenbelt.

The Boise River Greenbelt is a recreational and alternate transportation trail along the banks of the Boise River. It’s more than 30 miles long and is a wonderful walking, biking, jogging path–most paved but some on dirt.

BRG

The RV park we are staying at right now is less than 50 steps to the Greenbelt.

In three days, I’ve already ridden my bike about 10 miles and jogged about 3. Sophie doesn’t know it yet, but we’re getting up early tomorrow morning and jogging five miles before it gets too hot.

I LOVE the Greenbelt.
